NLR Still Working Out Details Of Submarine

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
The city of North Little Rock is working out plans so it will have a place to put a World War Two-era submarine that is being towed across the Atlantic Ocean. The sub is to be the centerpiece of a planned maritime museum on the Arkansas River in North Little Rock. The city has applied for an Army Corps of Engineers permit to build a mooring facility for three World War Two-era vessels, including the USS Razorback submarine, which the city purchased from Turkey this year. The sub, which was stationed in Tokyo upon Japanese surrender in 1945 and was sold to Turkey in 1970. The vessel is in tow. If approved, the permit would allow the city to affix several mooring columns to the bed of the river just west of the Interstate 30 bridge and permanently anchor three barges there. An 80-foot ramp would let people walk out to the barges. The sub will be docked on the river side of the barges. Two tug boats, the USS Hoga and USS North Little Rock, are to be housed on the inland side of the barges.
