MacKool Trial Update

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
A defense lawyer for Leslie MacKool says the Little Rock woman was afraid for her own life when she killed her mother. Attorney Bill James made that argument during opening statements in the capital murder trial for MacKool. She does not face the death penalty. James says Mike MacKool threatened to kill his wife if she botched the murder of her mother, Janie Ballard. Deputy Prosecutor W.A. McCormick said the couple thought they would receive up to a two million dollars` inheritance if her mother died within 30 days of her father. Leslie MacKool was given only $25,000 dollars of her father`s estate in a revised will made after she became involved with Mike MacKool. Both MacKools are charged with capital murder, and prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against the husband.
