Earthquake experts at the University
of Memphis have been comforting children worried about catastrophes
in the mid-South region after seeing NBC`s "Ten-point-five" miniseries this week, which portrays the aftermath of a huge earthquake.
Earthquake researcher Gary Patterson says people in the region should not be alarmed.
Memphis is about 50 miles south of the epicenter of one of the largest earthquakes ever to strike in North America -- the New Madrid earthquakes of the winter of 1811-1812 that shook the entire central section of the country.
The New Madrid fault zone takes in parts of at least five states
-- Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee.
The earthquake center says some children have e-mailed to express concerns about the risk of a devastating quake.
Patterson says children should relax and get ready to enjoy the summer.
