breaking news
The Army Corps of Engineers says its
system of dams along the White River and its tributaries in
Arkansas and Missouri worked the way it should have to prevent
major flooding. And the agency said the same is true of dams and
levees along the Arkansas River in this state and in Oklahoma.
A system of six reservoirs in the White River basin intended
mostly for flood control are operated according to plans that
consider the capacity of each reservoir. When it rains, each
reservoir traps water and holds it to minimize flooding downstream.
As flood conditions ease, water is released gradually in a
controlled manner.
By reducing the peak stage, the reservoirs reduce the amount of
damage that high water would otherwise cause.
Releases from Bull Shoals, Norfork and Greers Ferry Dams were
curtailed Saturday morning. By holding that water in Bull Shoals
and Norfork Lakes, the peak stages at Batesville and Newport, as
well as locations farther downstream, were greatly reduced.
