Woman Accused Of Inducing Labor In Daughter On Trial

A jury has been seated and testimony has begun in the case of a nurse in Searcy County accused in the death of her 13-year-old daughter`s baby. Forty-eight-year-old Julie Smith allegedly induced labor in her daughter, Nakita Smith, who was six months pregnant. Julie Smith is charged with first-degree murder stemming from the March 14, 2001, delivery. Authorities arrested Smith a year later when they learned about the baby and found his remains buried in a shallow grave behind Smith`s home. Smith was working as a day-shift nurse at the Searcy County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center when she was arrested. Nakita Smith testified for the prosecution yesterday. Prosecutors expect to rest their case today.
