Native American Artifacts Found At Construction Site

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Native American artifacts said to be almost 5,000 years old have been found at a Lake Fort Smith construction site. The artifacts found at the site include arrowheads and pottery. The items will be taken to University of Arkansas researchers, who will then catalogue them. Ray Gosack, Fort Smith deputy administrator, says artifacts that old are rare, since most items found in the area date from periods after Europeans moved to the region in the 1800s. Officials declined to provide specifics on where the artifacts were found to reduce the possibility of looting. Other artifacts from more recent periods have been discovered at the lake expansion site, where construction started in 2002 and is scheduled to be finished in 2006. Posted by Mike Hellgren
