A federal judge has approved an agreement
between Pulaski County officials and the U-S Justice Department to
fix problems with the county`s voter registration database.
The judge also set a Friday deadline for County Clerk Carolyn
Staley to set rules for handling voter rolls. She must submit a
rules for processing voter registration and removing voters who
have moved out of the county, been convicted of a crime or died.
By April 30th, Staley will have to provide the Justice
Department with an accurate list of which voters are to vote in
which polling places.
In the agreement, the Justice Department retained the right to
have its lawyers monitor polling places and the clerk`s office on
election nights.
Justice Department lawyers said the department investigated
"serious problems" with Pulaski County voter registration
practices that may have disenfranchised numerous voters.
