Anti-Alcohol Rally At State Capitol

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Activists met at the state Capitol today to demand changes in the Arkansas Beverage Control Board. Steve Jacobson, the president of Citizens Against Alcohol in Craighead County, called for Governor Huckabee to immediately replace three board members on the panel. All five members live in wet counties, and Jacobson said three should be replaced with dry county residents. About 150 supporters shouted "Amen" when Jacobson made that request. The group included church members and civic leaders from across the state. The activists were upset about recent decisions to broaden the definition of "private clubs" that can sell alcohol. Before legislation in 2003, that status was usually reserved for places such as golf courses or private party rooms.
