A new Arkansas travel guide gives visitors a
view based on where presidents have visited in the state. Nineteen
presidents have traveled in Arkansas -- starting with Martin Van
Buren in 1841.
The Destination Arkansas tourism promotion effort is to be
officially launched today -- at the Capitol Hotel in Little Rock,
where then-former President Ulysses S. Grant stayed in 1880.
Every sitting president since Herbert Hoover in 1929 visited
Arkansas. But Arkansas took awhile to catch on as a travel
destination for the chief executive.
Seventeen presidents did not make it to the state, including
nine of the first eleven to hold office during Arkansas` statehood.
The state, the city of Little Rock and the state`s future
tourism centerpiece, the Clinton Presidential Library, researched
presidential visits since Arkansas became the 25th state, in 1836.
