Jefferson County Coroner Candidate Arrested

A candidate for the Democratic nomination for Jefferson County coroner was arrested this week on a six-year-old felony warrant. Alex Thomas, a deputy coroner, filed for the position held by Holly Watkins-Sperry, who is seeking re-election. Thomas was charged Wednesday with theft of property and failure to appear in court after being taken arrested by State Police investigators at Prosecuting Attorney Steve Dalrymple`s office. Trey Ashcraft, chairman of the county Election Commission, says the arrest will not change Thomas` status as a candidate, but he would be disqualified if convicted. Dalrymple said the theft charge stemmed from an allegation that Thomas took money from a Pine Bluff liquor store where he worked in October 1997. Posted by Mike Hellgren
