Wal-Mart has taken some hits in court and,
most recently, at the ballot box.
But company chief executive Lee Scott says the company is
adapting and becoming stronger. He says the world`s largest
retailer is trying to do more to explain what the company stands
for.
Scott told a luncheon audience of 750 business people today that
the company has not reached out enough as it focused on growth.
Wal-Mart was on the losing end of a vote yesterday in the Los
Angeles suburb of Inglewood that would have allowed the company to
build a shopping center. Scott blamed himself and the company for
the failure to win over voters.
The Bentonville-based company also is the subject of numerous
lawsuits. In San Francisco, a group of women is suing over
allegations they were sexually harassed and that they were subject
to gender-based discrimination. In Oregon, Wal-Mart fought a
lawsuit that resulted in a jury finding it did not pay overtime to
83 workers. About three dozen similar lawsuits are pending.
