Term Limits May Change

Two groups say they have had enough of term
limits for legislators in Arkansas.
The state Chamber of Commerce-Associated Industries of Arkansas
is organizing groups representing wide-ranging public and private
interests to back a legislative proposal to change Amendment 73.
Passed by voters in 1992, Amendment 73 limits state
representatives to three two-year terms and state senators to two
four-year terms.
Proposed Amendment One, referred by the Legislature to the
November general election ballot, would allow House members to
serve six two-year terms and allow state senators to serve three
four-year terms.
Chamber President Ron Russell says his group will work to pass
the measure. The Arkansas Farm Bureau says it will support the
measure, too.
Critics say the term-limits rule forces out legislators just as
they have learned the legislative process.
