Consolidation Update: Sparkman

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Sparkman School District officials have given up on finding a voluntary consolidation partner and will instead ask the state to pair their schools with the Harmony Grove district. Sparkman has 270 students and therefore is among 57 small school districts ordered by the state to join another district under Act 60. Sparkman failed to formalize an agreement after talks with the Bearden and Arkadelphia districts. Sparkman also talked with Carthage, but the two small districts mutually decided against merging. The Harmony Grove School Board voted four-to-three this month to reject a proposed annexation of the Sparkman district. Sparkman Superintendent Jerry Moore said there`s no incentive for Sparkman`s neighbors to take it. Posted by Mike Hellgren
