Friends, family and fellow Marines remembered 20-year-old Brandon Smith of Fayetteville as a caring person, a positive example to others and a great Marine. Smith was killed March 17th in Iraq, while trying to help fellow Marines under mortar fire. About 100 people packed into the Center Street Church of Christ for Smith`s funeral yesterday. At the gravesite, friends presented individual white roses to Smith`s family and put more atop his casket. Marines fired a 21-gun salute, presented Smith`s family with the flag from his casket and his Purple Heart medal, and played taps over the gravesite at the National Cemetery in Fayetteville. Smith`s unit had been in Iraq about three weeks when Smith was killed.
