Former Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice
John A. Fogleman, known for his influence on state case law, died
Wednesday at his home. He was 92.
Fogleman, a Marion native who spent 70 years in the legal
profession, became an associate justice on the state Supreme Court
in 1976. In 1981, then-Governor Bill Clinton appointed Fogleman as
chief justice.
He retired from the high court a year later and taught law at
the University of Arkansas at Little Rock while continue to
practice law in Little Rock.
Fogleman also served for a time as president of the Arkansas Bar
Association.
During his tenure on the bench, he wrote over 1,000 opinions. In 1977, Fogleman wrote the majority opinion on a case
that found the state`s death penalty constitutional.
