Confessed Murderer May Stay Behind Bars After Challenge

The state attorney general`s office agrees that technical errors were made when Governor Huckabee granted clemency for a confessed killer. Those errors void Don Jeffers` eligibility for parole and leave a prosecutor who sued Huckabee over the issue claiming victory. A Huckabee spokesman indicated the governor could start the process over again. Huckabee was sued by Saline County Prosecutor Robert Herzfeld and Brandie Jones, granddaughter of the man Jeffers admitted killing. They argued, in part, that Huckabee and the Post Prison Transfer Board did NOT follow procedure in granting clemency. In a letter to Herzfeld, Deputy Attorney General Wendy Kelley says it is clear that not all procedures were followed. Jeffers, age 55, is serving a life sentence for the 1980 bludgeoning death of William Hash. Clemency made him eligible for parole. Posted by Mike Hellgren
