Monday First Day For Tax Increase

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
The state sales tax goes up to six cents on the dollar Monday. The Legislature increased the tax to help fund improvements to the public school system. The increase will raise an estimated 338 million dollars a year. City and county sales taxes would be added to the total. Still, Arkansas` sales tax is lower than the rates in Mississippi and Tennessee. Both of those states levy seven cents on the dollar. But the rates in other surrounding states are lower -- four-and-a-half cents in Oklahoma, four-point-225 in Missouri, and four cents on the dollar in Louisiana.
