Police plan to scour central Arkansas
tonight, counting homeless on the street and in shelters for a
survey that will determine how much grant money area shelters can
receive.
The city of Little Rock says the count will include 40 sites in
Lonoke, Prairie, Pulaski and Saline counties. The results are to be
released in about a month and will establish how much federal and
private assistance homeless shelters are eligible to receive.
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development requires
a count every three years. The 2001 count showed two-thousand-634
homeless people in the region.
City statistics show that within the four-county area, 90
percent of the homeless live in Little Rock.
