Tax Season in Bloom

Updated: January 7, 2009
It`s that time of the year, again: tax season is in full swing and many have already gotten their first headache, trying to sort it all out. "Mine is so complicated being a truck driver and having all those deductions," said Billy Bowers. If you`ve been expecting a big refund, be carefule. You may have already taken your tax cut home. "When taxes go down the government adjusts the withholding table, so as your tax goes down, so does your withholding. You see more coming out in your paycheck," said Mary Harris, Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. And when you file, you`ll need to remember how much money you received from Uncle Sam last summer, when the government sent out advanced checks on the child tax credit. If you qualified for the $1,000-credit, and received the $400 advance, you`ll only recieve the remaining $600. If you didn`t receive the advance, and still qualify, you can receive the full credit amount. "There`s been quite a bit of confusion about that," Harris said. Married couples will notice their standard deduction increased to $9,500, from $7,950. And they`ll have a new tax rate of 10% for the first $14,000. "Many people think they can spend a few hours throwing things together, maybe they try to go online, but they find online programs, there`s just not enough information to help you," Harris said. And no longer will you have an extra month to file your Arkansas state taxes, they`re no due on the same day as your federal, April 15th.
