Seeing Smoke For A Good Reason

Updated: January 7, 2009
As the prescribed burn season starts off, forest rangers are setting controlled blazes in parts of Arkansas. Over the next several weeks, rangers are expected to be burning off underbrush on the south face of Mount Magazine and near Buffalo National River in Searcy County. Tracy Powers, spokeswoman for the forest service, says the controlled fires are usually set between January and March because vegetation has not started its seasonal growth. Rangers burn underbrush to keep accidental fires from getting out of control and to improve habitat for both vegetation and wildlife. Rangers are also burning areas in LeFlore County, north of Page, Oklahoma. Posted by Mike Hellgren
