Bush Visits Arkansas` National Guard Troops

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Visiting an army base in Louisiana, President Bush has told cheering troops the enemy in Iraq "will be defeated -- and freedom will prevail." The president flew to sprawling Fort Polk to see National Guard troops getting ready to head for Baghdad -- and boost morale at a base that`s lost a dozen soldiers in Iraq. Addressing several thousand khaki-clad troops outside a large hangar, Bush said it`s clear terrorists and Saddam Hussein loyalists are making a stand in Iraq. But he said they don`t "understand the nature of our troops." Bush met privately with the families of seven soldiers killed in Iraq -- and had lunch with an army unit made up of National Guard from Arkansas. Press Secretary Scott McClellan insists the base visit was set up before a furor erupted over Bush`s Vietnam-era service in the National Guard. Posted by Mike Hellgren
