Old Man Winter Pays a Brief Visit to Arkansas

Saturday night brought snowfall to the southwest quarter of the Natural State. All that snow came as quite a surprise, to some people, but the National Weather Service says they were expecting some sort of precipitation, but the tricky part is figuring out what. The service says for a few days, they knew we`d have some of the ingredients to make snow: like the upper level low pressure system in Louisiana and the moisture in the air. What they didn`t know was if it would be cold enough here on the ground to form snow. "Most people think you can`t get accumulating snow with temperatures above freezing, but when it comes down heavily enough in that situation, you can indeed pile up snow on the ground," said John Robinson, National Weather Service. And during of that time last night, temperatures in Little Rock never reached the freezing point. They were mostly around 33 or 34 degrees, making it rare for last night`s snow to accumulate. Because because it fell so rapidly it was able to stick. Once it stopped snowing, some of it began to melt before dawn, and continued as the sun came up on Sunday.
