"White Flight" Could Be A Big Problem

Updated: January 7, 2009
The superintendent of schools in Camden says that white flight is concern if smaller school districts in the area consolidate. Jerry Guess said the result has typically been an exodus of white families to go with the white district. Guess and others are talking about a lawsuit over consoldiation. But Camden Representative Robert Jeffrey doesn`t believe that. The legislator says he suspects Guess and his supporters are bluffing. Jeffrey said the lawsuit talk is an attempt to stop the merger because of an unfounded concern over white flight. A new state law requires the administration of school districts with fewer than 350 students to merge with another district. It affects 57 school districts, and they must complete consolidation by July first.
