Updated: January 7, 2009
The process of merging the administrations of Arkansas` smallest school districts is to officially begin today. The state is to release a list of about five dozen districts subject to consolidation. In the special session that concluded Friday, the Legislature ordered administration consolidation of districts with fewer than 350 students. Districts get to choose their partners -- subject to state approval -- if they submit consolidation plans by April first. Those that don`t are to be paired by the state Department of Education. Consolidation is to be completed by July first. The Legislature set aside 37 million dollars in incentive money to smooth the transition.
