Static Electrcity Sparks Car Fire In Jefferson County

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Pine Bluff officials are blaming static electricity for a fire that significantly damaged a vehicle. The fire apparently began when a customer pumping gasoline touched the pump nozzle, causing a static electrical spark that ignited gasoline vapors. The Petroleum Equipment Institute has documented more than 100 fueling fires that appear to have been caused by static electricity. ExxonMobil suggests that customers touch exterior metal on their vehicle with their bare hand to ground themselves anytime they are about to touch a gas nozzle. If a fire starts, do not touch or remove the pump nozzle. Get away from the vehicle. Posted by Mike Hellgren
