Schools needing improvement down to 275 from 342

The original list of 342 schools identified by the state Education Department as academically deficient because of chronically low student test scores has been reduced to 275 schools.
The department identified the schools in October in response to
the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Since then, 67 schools have gone through an appeals process and been removed from the list.
The department will produce a new list after another round of student testing in the spring.
Schools are placed on the list either because the overall school
enrollment or one or more student subgroups at the schools fall short of state-mandated test scores over a two- or three-year period.
The 342 schools on the initial list represented about 30 percent of the state`s eleven-hundred schools.
