Car Theft Ring Busted

The owner of a Crawfordsville towing service is under arrest on suspicion of participating in an auto-theft operation. Police say they found several stolen vehicles on 40-year-old Stanley Bedford`s property, which was crowded with vehicles and car parts. Bedford was arrested yesterday. Bedford had been under surveillance for possible drug trafficking. Officials said they believe Bedford picked up cars on the interstates and streets surrounding Memphis. Memphis police Lieutenant Dennis Benjamin -- who is in charge of the investigation -- says it appeared Bedford had been unlawfully picking up automobiles for some time. Bedford, who police say has a prior conviction in Arkansas for second-degree murder, is expected to be charged and arraigned Friday in West Memphis District Court. Posted by Mike Hellgren
