Arkansas Treasurer Gus Wingfield has been
reprimanded by the state Ethics Commission and fined 750 dollars.
The panel acted on three complaints filed against Wingfield.
Wingfield acknowledged in a settlement that he violated an
ethics law that prohibits officials from using their positions to
secure special privileges or exemptions for their children that are
not available to others.
Other state constitutional officers also have family members
working for them. But the commission said Wingfield`s hiring and
promotion of his two daughters constituted special privilege. His
daughters -- Valerie Wallace and Margaret Gutierrez -- both work
for him and have received promotions.
Both daughters were employed by Wingfield when he was state
auditor. He became state treasurer in January 2003.
