Updated: January 7, 2009
The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday gave many people the day off, but some of those Arkansas still headed off to get a job done. For example, 100 children reported to Bale Elementary to help build Dr. King`s "Beloved Community." "He told us to keep peace in our culture, like if people hate you, if whites hate you, just forget about it, love them either way it goes," said 5th grader, Alaundra Walker. Through games and activities like the human knot or Do You Love Your Neighbor? kids learned lessons in team building and including others. "So kids begin to understand what it means to be segregated and what it means now that we`re not. Kids have the opportunity to work toether, learn more about each other," said Emily Cook, a City Year volunteer.
