Friday Governor Huckabee filed papers that may pardon former Attorney General Steve Clark. The governor
said Clark has suffered humiliation, bankruptcy and criminal
penalties after being convicted of theft in 1990.
Huckabee said Clark has paid fines and court costs -- even
though a bankruptcy filing made it unnecessary -- and deserved a
chance to "rebuild his clearly broken life."
Clark was elected attorney general in 1978. He announced his
candidacy for governor in January 1990 but aborted the campaign
just weeks later after an Arkansas Gazette report that his office
had spent $115,000 in travel and meals.
He was later charged with felony theft. In November 1990, a
Pulaski County jury convicted him of wrongfully charging less than
$2,500 for personal use. He resigned as attorney
general.
Clark was not sentenced to prison.
Huckabee said Clark paid fines, restitution and court costs of
more than $18,000 and the state parole board has
recommended Clark`s pardon.
The pardon would restore Clark`s rights, except the right to own
or possess firearms.
