Pine Bluff Arsenal Wants Permanent No-Fly Zone

The Pine Bluff Arsenal wants a permanent no-fly zone over its chemical weapons stockpile and incinerator. Lieutenant Colonel Jim Bayha said the Army has a representative at the Federal Aviation Administration pushing for the change. There currently is a temporary flight restriction over the arsenal. The restricted airspace is an imaginary cylander extending out from the arsenal`s storage area three miles in all directions and 3,000 feet up. But now it is just a notice to aviators, Bayha says. Permanent prohibited airspace status would keep all aircraft out without prior approval from the Army. Bayha says a no-fly zone will protect the arsenal from terrorist attack. The arsenal holds 12 percent of the nation`s chemical weapons stockpile and incinerators that will be used to destroy those weapons starting this spring. Posted by Mike Hellgren
