Jurors voted to convict a Yemeni man today
on charges he produced fake identification cards.
However, U-S District Judge Bill Wilson Junior decided to hold
the verdict pending a mental evaluation of the defendant,
39-year-old Nasser Ahmen Ameri.
Ameri was indicted on 103 federal counts after his October 2002
arrest and was on trial on 18 of them this week. Investigators say
they found more than 100 phony driver licenses and identification
cards in his apartment and more than 20-thousand dollars in cash --
but no evidence of a link to terrorists.
Wilson had conducted the trial without Ameri in court; Ameri was
not present, telling his attorney that he believed he couldn`t
receive a fair trial in the United States.
Doctor Brad Diner, a psychiatrist, evaluated Ameri today and
told the court that he does NOT believe Ameri is competent to stand
trial or assist in his defense when he`s not on medication for
anxiety and depression.
