Wesley Clark has edged slightly ahead of John
Kerry to move into second place behind Howard Dean in the New
Hampshire Democratic presidential race.
Clark, a retired general from Little Rock, has been gaining
ground in national polls and is trying to position himself as the
alternative to Dean, the former governor of Vermont. Dean had the
backing of 35 percent of likely primary voters in the New Hampshire
tracking poll. Clark was supported by 18 percent while Kerry, a
senator from Massachusetts, had 12 percent.
A year ago, Kerry led Dean by a two-to-one margin in this poll.
Clark has been moving up steadily in the tracking poll, but
campaign aides don`t expect him to catch up with Dean in the state.
They are looking ahead to more competitive races in the South and
West.
