Major Pot Bust On Christmas Eve

Updated: January 7, 2009
Christmas Eve found police in Bella Vista asking a judge to sign a search warrant for a storage unit where they found 100 pounds of marijuana. Police found the drugs with help from an anonymous tip to the local Crimestoppers phone line. Investigators say they cut the lock on the unit and inside they found two large, black plastic trunks with about 100 pounds of processed marijuana. Police said the woman who is renting the unit, who they would not name, was cooperating. No arrests have been made. Police said they hope she will provide them with information leading to higher-level drug traffickers. The marijuana was formed into about 80 tightly packed bricks that weighed more than a pound each, police said. Each brick had been put in a plastic freezer bag and wrapped in shrink wrap and local newspapers, some dated earlier this week, before they were secured with duct tape. Authorities said the seized marijuana would be worth between 100 thousand and 120 thousand dollars. Investigators think the marijuana originated in Mexico before being smuggled into Bella Vista.
