Some Interstate Lanes Will Be Closed For The Holiday

Updated: January 7, 2009
The state highway department says 14 miles of Arkansas` interstates would have lanes closed during the holiday season. The largest closure is on Interstate 40 in western Arkansas, where eight miles of highway will be reduced to one lane near Clarksville. The closures will affect eastbound and westbound traffic. Other closures include four miles of Interstate 55 between West Memphis and Memphis, Tennessee, and one mile each near Texarkana and Forrest City. The lane closures will be in effect at least through January fourth. Construction projects in the Little Rock area do not have lane closures but some lanes are narrowed, with little or no shoulders. The Highway and Transportation Department recommends travelers using the interstates allow extra time to reach their destinations or travel at off-peak travel times. The department is amid a five-year, nearly one billion dollar rehabilitation project for most of Arkansas` 344 miles of interstate highways.
