Prosecutor fights clemency

Updated: January 7, 2009
Governor Huckabee announced earlier this week his intentions to grant clemency to inmate Don Jeffers. Jeffers is serving a life sentence for beating William Hash to death in 1980. Jeffers allegedly beat Hash with his prosthetic leg. Now the prosecutor of Saline County, where the murder took place, has written a letter to the governor asking him to reconsider. Robert Herzfeld is furious that his office was not contacted, "It`s baffling to me why the governor wants to give this guy a break. No one gave William Hash a break." Jeffers was spared the death penalty in a plea bargain agreement. Jeffers admitted to the murder in exchange for a sentence of life in prison. The victims family is now writing the governor`s office as well. Huckabee`s office says he does not explain his reasons for clemency because other inmates could use the same line of reasoning.
