Legislators Gear Up For Tomorrow`s Special Session

Updated: January 7, 2009
When the special legislative session opens Monday, 135 legislators will have three weeks to hammer out a plan to overhaul the public schools. Six proposals have been discussed but there`s been no agreement. Governor Huckabee has proposed a one-cent sales tax increase to pay for the changes. The sales tax is the easiest tax to raise, requiring only 51 votes in the House and 18 in the Senate. But while legislators acknowledge that taxes will have to be raised, they say they would rather avoid an overall tax increase, and possibly expand the sales tax base by eliminating exemptions or taxing services not previously taxed.
