Update : Judge Agrees To Take Staley Case And Federal Government Threatens To Sue County

Updated: January 7, 2009
A Pulaski County circuit judge has agreed to take on the case of County Circuit Clerk Carolyn Staley, whom a grand jury has requested be removed from office. Also, the Justice Department has sent the county a letter saying Staley`s office is in violation of the national Voters Registration Act and is threatening a lawsuit. Prosecutor Larry Jegley said this morning that there is "no defense" against the federal allegations. He says the proper thing to do is remove Staley and -- quote -- "get someone in there who will exercise the competent leadership required." Judge Marion Humphrey agreed yesterday to conduct a hearing on Staley`s removal. No hearing date has been set. A special grand jury determined that Staley`s office failed to perform its duty of keeping an accurate database of registered voters.
