Updated: January 7, 2009
Federal Homeland Security officials are ending a program for registering mostly Middle Eastern men and boys with the government. Posted by Mike Hellgren The mandatory registration was begun after the September eleventh, 2001, terror attacks. Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security Asa Hutchinson said today the department will focus more on individuals instead of "broad categories." He says the decision wasn`t influenced by recent negative publicity about the controversial program. He says the program could be revived if there`s another terrorist attack linked to a foreign country. The government is expected to start a new program January fifth to digitally photograph and fingerprint (m) millions of people who visit the United States each year. Hutchinson is a former Arkansas congressman. Posted by Mike Hellgren
