Doctors warn the popular high-protein, no carbs diet may not safe.
A national group of physicians says it`s led to serious heart problems an even death.
The diet boasts quick weight loss by eating high fat and high protein foods and almost eliminating carbohydrates.
A UAMS cardiologist says the diet can lead to losing more than just weight.
"Potassium, calcium, magnesium, these are critical to regulating heart rhythm," said Dr. Jay Mehta, director of cardiology.
Dr. Mehta says the diet can have little effect on HDL, or the bad cholesterol, but it elevated the LDL, or good cholesterol.
Even then he advises against it.
Mehta says a well-balanced diet will help to lose just as much weight as the Atkins, and can be safer.
