Report: State Nursing Homes Don`t Meet Guidelines

Updated: January 7, 2009
A report commissioned by Congressman Vic Snyder shows Arkansas nursing homes don`t make the grade. The report shows 224 state nursing homes have inadequate staffing. 81 homes have at least one violation which could put residents in harm`s way, the report said. The Arkansas Health Care Association, which represents several nursing homes, says the numbers are misleading. According to Randy Wyatt, executive director of Arkansas Health Care Association, "There are no national standards for minimum staffing." Wyatt also says the repoort didn`t include the cost of adding additional staff, which he estimates to be $11 billion a year. Snyder plans to meet with nursing home representatives in a few weeks.
