Opponents of a ban on smoking in restaurants fell short in an effort to gather enough signatures to put the measure on the ballot in Fayetteville. But the group still has a chance to bring the proposal to a vote. The Fayetteville City Council approved the smoking ban September 2nd and it would go into effect in February. Members of Free Choice Fayetteville, a group of restaurant and bar owners opposed to the ban, have conducted two petition drives. The group hopes an election would overturn the ban. Signatures from the first petition were not approved because the ciy clerk said copies of the ordinance were not attached. But the free choice group is suing to have those signatures combined with those from the new drive.
