Voters in Independence County have rejected a
proposal to collect an additional half-cent on the dollar in sales
taxes. It was intended to fund efforts to boost employment by
recruiting more business and industry.
Meanwhile, residents of the Heber Springs School District
approved a restructuring of property taxes in the district that
didn`t involve any increase in taxes.
In Independence County`s special election on Tuesday, about
170 votes were cast in favor of the half-cent sales tax
increase, while more than four thousand voted against it.

At Heber Springs, more than four-hundred ballots were cast in
favor of restructuring the school districts property tax millage,
while 45 people voted against it.
The vote was taken to comply with a state Supreme Court ruling
in November 2002 that a school district must levy at least
25 mills for school maintenance and operations.
