Wal-Mart Sued By Immigrant Workers

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Nine workers arrested in raids on Wal-Mart Stores have filed a lawsuit against the world`s largest retailer in federal court in Newark, New Jersey. They say Wal-Mart conspired with contractors in a criminal enterprise that violated the civil rights and wage protections of immigrants who cleaned the stores. The suit seeks class-action status for perhaps thousands of immigrants, legal and illegal. Attorney James Linsey alleges the scheme violated the Racketeering Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act by depriving the workers of labor law protections over at least the last three years. The suit replaces a discrimination lawsuit seeking more than $200,000 in back pay filed by the same workers last week in state court in Freehold. Wal-Mart had no immediate comment.
