Updated: January 7, 2009
Governor Huckabee has set a double execution for January sixth. Charles Singleton, a mentally ill inmate kept sane by forced medication and Karl Roberts are to die. Singleton has been on death row 24 years -- the longest-serving inmate awaiting execution. He was sentenced to die before Arkansas changed its method from electrocution to lethal injection and will chose his method. Roberts will die by lethal injection. Riley Dobi Noel was the last inmate executed by the state, on July ninth. Singleton and Roberts will be the 26th and 27th inmates to die in Arkansas since the state resumed executions. Singleton was convicted in the 1979 stabbing death of Hamburg grocer Mary Lou York, who identified Singleton as her killer before dying. Roberts was sentenced to death for kidnapping and killing his 12-year-old niece in 1999 in Polk County. Roberts says he wants to die.
