Murder Suspect Tries To Escape From Saline County Jail

Updated: January 7, 2009
Officials say a 15-year-old boy charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a retired vice principal in Benton tried to escape from his cell in the Saline County jail. William Edward Powell the Fifth was moved to a more secure adult cell after he was caught with his feet dangling from the false ceiling Tuesday night. Police say Powell removed a ceiling tile and climbed through. Jailers say Powell would have had a tough time getting out of the building, even if he had gotten into the ceiling. He would have had to have gone through the booking area and through locked doors to get free. Officials had held Powell in isolation since his arrest Friday in the shooting death of 62-year-old Dillard L. Avaritt of Benton.
