Pine Bluff Alderman Want Investigation Into City Records

Some aldermen in Pine Bluff say they`re tired of being surprised about city spending. So they want to ask the state Division of Legislative Audit to examine the city`s financial records. The resolution is expected to be on the agenda for next week`s City Council meeting. The city of Pine Bluff has been struggling with its budget for a while. Reserve funds have been used to cover a gap between revenue and expenses. That gap is projected to reach 8.4 million dollars by the end of 2003. Now, the reserves are nearly depleted. And the city is seeking a one-cent sales tax increase in a special election on November Fourth. If the tax increase vote fails, city officials are warning of significant cuts in city personnel and services.
