Jury Selection Begins In Trial Of Dumas Mayor

Updated: January 7, 2009
Jury selection began this morning in the theft trial of Dumas Mayor Clay Oldner. Oldner faces various felony and misdemeanor charges in connection with 30-thousand dollars taken from the city. Oldner was charged last October with felony counts of theft of property, public record tampering and misdemeanors of abuse of office and witness tampering. Despite the charges, the mayor was re-elected last year with 60 percent of the vote in a runoff with former City Clerk Mary Howard. The charges have split the community of Dumas. Many residents credit him with a variety of city improvements that have set Dumas apart in the impoverished Delta region. Others have accused him of sullying the reputation of the city with the charges.
