The cellmate of a 62-year-old inmate at the state prison`s Cummins Unit is suspected in the man`s death. The inmate died after his throat was slashed. Prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler says Willie E- Campbell was attacked early yesterday as he lay in his bunk in the two-man cell. The suspect in the slaying is 21-year-old John H- Luckett. He`s serving a 40-year sentence for first-degree murder. The spokeswoman says the cellmate first told officers Campbell had committed suicide, and then said he killed Campbell in self-defense. She says Luckett showed no signs of having been in a struggle. The prison says Campbell was still alive when guards making routine cell checks discovered he had been assaulted about one-25 a-m. He was rushed to a hospital at Dumas, but died soon after arrival.
