Judge Says Clark County Clerk Violated Students Rights

Updated: January 7, 2009
A federal judge has ruled that Clark County Clerk Rhonda Williams violated the rights of college students by removing them from the county`s voter rolls. In an order made public yesterday, federal Judge George Howard Junior issued a permanent injunction barring Williams from rejecting applications for voter registration from Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University students. Williams was sued before last year`s election after purging students from voter rolls to comply with an order from Circuit Judge John A. Thomas. The circuit judge acted after a suit was filed by a Clark County resident who argued the students shouldn`t be allowed to vote. ------ The American Civil Liberties Union sued on behalf of students, including Governor Huckabee`s daughter, Sarah. The governor was initially named as a defendant, though he was later dropped. The ruling states that plaintiffs are entitled to attorneys` fees and costs.
